Medical Bill Reduction

The rising costs of medical care have forced many Americans to seek debt reduction remedies. Before filing bankruptcy or seeking other debt relief options, consumers should review an itemized bill for any services rendered. Not only is it possible that you were billed for treatments you never received, but most states regulate that any medical services must be reasonably priced, which oftentimes they are not. This is part 3 of a series on common ways that hospitals overcharge their patients.

More Common Hospital Billing Errors

11. Delays for circumstances beyond your control – If your procedure is delayed because of a problem on the medical provider’s end, you should not have to pay for the extra time you had to stay in the hospital as a result of that. Given how expensive a hospital stay can be, the cost of delays can be quite dramatic. Here’s a list of the most common reasons for procedural delays:

A. Test re-scheduling delays – If a hospital is busy and forced to re-schedule your test, oftentimes you are not able to get the results for another 24 hours, which further delays the time until you can get your surgery. That extra day you may be unnecessarily billed for.

B. Test result delays – Whether the department is busy or the results are misplaced forcing you to have another test, this is a common reason why hospital stays are longer than they need to be. v C. Surgery delays – Perhaps the doctor who was scheduled to perform the surgery was overbooked or some other reason caused your procedure to be pushed back. Under these circumstances, the hospital should be held accountable, not the patient.

D. Teaching delays – If the hospital wants a large number of its residents to review your case for educational purposes, it can be a waste of your time and money. Hospitals typically do this when your case is rare and they want every resident to have an opportunity to learn about it. That may be the case, but you should not be stuck with the bill when this happens.

E. Late Check Out – Sometimes a delay as little as a few hours for your check out can result in a bill for an entire day. If the late check out is the result of a hospital delay, you should not be liable for the charges.
