The Truth About The Government Bailout for Credit Card Debt

Have you been targeted with mail promising an Barack Obama government-sponsored bailout for your credit card debt? Are you curious about television commercials and radio advertisements suggesting there is a consumer debt relief initiative as part of the economic stimulus package which can reduce your credit card balances? Franklin Debt Relief is here to let consumers know that these ads are deceptively marketing debt settlement services, not a government-endorsed program that promises to bailout consumers from their debt obligations in the same fashion the United States Department of the Treasury “bailed out” banks during the recession.

The Television Ad

The television commercial, “Debt Crisis in America,” is a blatant example of companies taking advantage of widespread public misconceptions about President Obama’s economic stimulus act. The main purpose of this advertisement is to deceive consumers into believing that the commercial is a news alert. In bold letters across the top of the commercial are the words, “Debt Crisis in America,” there is an attractive actress who is dressed like your typical Fox news anchor, and across the bottom of the screen is a news ticker urging people to call the “Debt Relief hotline” before time runs out on the offer. While the ad does not explicitly say it is a government-sponsored “bailout” the implications certainly are there.

The Direct Mail Letter

Another way companies are misleading consumers is through the use of direct mail sent to consumers. Oftentimes these letters strongly resemble communications one receives from the IRS and are emblazoned with a logo insinuating the letter was sent by a government agency, the National Debt Relief Division. Even the return address is Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. The purpose of the letter, it states, is to alert Americans that with the recent passage of Obama’s “Consumer Debt Initiative Stimulus Act” that they may qualify for a reduction in the principal balance of their credit card debt.

Talk a Reputable Company

Franklin Debt Relief strongly urges against using companies who use these type of tactics to enroll consumers in their debt relief programs. At Franklin we understand that debt problems is an important issue that should be marketed honestly to consumers.
